Out and About + Gymnastics

On Saturday 18th June, Rhys Cameron and Will and Rory Salmon play for Adelaide Uni Rugby Team at Waite oval. It was fantastic to see the boys compete in a sport that is not typically mainstream in South Australia. Congratulations on the win.

For the past two weeks, students in P.E have been participating in a Gymnastics program. It has been great to get the students jumping and tumbling again with some new equipment being purchased through government grants. I am looking forward to adding to our resources and developing the program further in the next few years.

Milestone Run and Soccer Success

Mt Barker Park Run

On Saturday morning Rebekah Hilton and Jordan Cresp reached the impressive milestone of 50 Park Runs around the 5km circuit at the Mt Barker Wetlands. The two Year 6 students ran together to celebrate their achievement.

The Park Run is a well organised event that is seeing participant number growing every week. It is family friendly and allows participants to go at their own ability. If you are looking to get more active give the Mt Barker Park Run a go. 7:50am every Saturday behind Harvey Norman at the Homemaker Centre.

Despite only having two practice sessions the boys worked very well as a team sharing the ball around to allow a number of scoring options. Goal scorers were Tyler Weyland (4) Tomas Bond and Dylan Weyland (2) and Jye Martin (1).

We will play the winner of Aldgate primary and Mylor/Scott Creek/Heathfield

Cross Country Success

Yesterday 44 students from St Michael’s participated at the Barker SAPSASA Cross Country event at Woodside Recreation Grounds. On a beautiful Autumn day the St Michael’s students were ready to run after 3 weeks of practicing at school. Race lengths varied with 11 and 12 year old students running 3km and 10 year old students running 2km. All of the students competed to the best of their abilities, all red faced and exhausted after their races. A special mention must go to the 10yr and 11yr boys who won the team events and to Will K and Charlie S for coming first in their age groups. Our 10yr old girls also did very well placing 2nd in the teams event.

The great efforts from all our runners resulted in us winning the Adjusted trophy and finishing  3rd overall on 68 points, two points shy of 1st place on 70.

Congratulations to you all.

Netball

Last Friday the St Michael’s Knockout Netball team played Hahndorf Primary in Bukatila. Playing against girls in Year 6 and 7 was quite challenging for our young team and despite the girls best efforts we couldn’t keep pace with the Hahndorf team. The final score was 31-3. A special thanks to Mrs Daughtry, Mrs Zadow and Allan Ryan for their assistance on the day.

HOCKEY HELP (From Steve Olsson)

The Adelaide Hills Under 11 Hockey team is looking for three to four players to help boost the numbers of their Hornets team. If you are a boy or girl in year 4 or 5 and are interested in trying out this fast moving and dynamic sport please contact Steve Olsson on 0410 126 028.

Below is a match report from round 1.

The hard work of pitch preparation and line marking had largely been washed away by overnight rain, but sunny skies greeted  the eager young Hornets for the first game of the junior mixed hockey season at Anembo. First up were the under 9’s and with 5 of the regular players away, the call was put out to  the veterans of last year’s team who were still age eligble. The game against Forsetville was a tight affair early. Making their debut was Max and Charlie Moule- Hooworth who  quickly showed their sporting prowess and adapted  their slick soccer skills to the hockey format. Daniel “ The Enforcer” Banham and Oscar Percy just picked up from where they left off last season and were solid in defence thwarting many Forestville attacks. By half time the game was fairly evenly poised.

In the second half, the more mature Hornets starting to gain control of the game  over their younger opponents with the team growing in confidence and starting to pass the ball wide to set up attacks on goal. It was ultimately the goal hungry Olsson boys  who converted the opportunities with Mack slotting 2 goals and Alex 4. A solid 6-0 win being a great way to start the season, with the hope of regular players returning to the team next week.

With a shortage of numbers, those players then buttered up again for the under 11 game against Forestville Red. With fresh legs, Forestville had plenty of early forward entries but Oli Angel showed  poise and skill in goals  way beyond his years and experience with several saves and clearances. Not be outdone, plenty of gut running by Matilda Angel saw the Hornets start to take the ascendancy in the midfield and she set up plenty of circle entries for Hills. Coach Ben Angel  seemed nervous on debut but soon found his voice and seemed pleased with the response he got from his chargers as the game started to  turn in favour of Hills.  Two goals were slotted before half time, firstly by Oscar Harvey and then Alex Olsson.

A quick goalie switch released Oli Angel into the game and saw he and Harry Moule-Hoowarth ( also on debut) start to take control in the midfield. Oscar Harvey donned the pads for the first time, but saw little action for the half other than the challenge of trying to use his drink bottle with a helmet on. The Hornets started to play on from free hits and move the ball quicker. It was a pleasure to watch, but Forestville defended admirably and repelled  most Hills attacks. Eventually the pressure was too great and Matilda Angel hit the backboard sealing a 3-0 win for the Hornets.  Special mentions must go to Max and Charlie Moule- Hoowarth who looked  comfortable at the level at only 8 years of age and having only picked up a stick for the first time less than 24 hours earlier, as well as Mack Olsson who wasn’t afraid to mix it with the best of them at only 7 years of age.

A solid start to the season for both teams, with wins to both sides being an outstanding result given that both teams played with one player short. Well done Hornets!

 Thanks Steve

SAPSASA Athletics and Softball

SAPSASA ATHLETICS

Yesterday 29 students from St Michael’s competed at the Barker District SAPSASA Athletics carnival at Oakbank. With perfect weather conditions for athletics the students were keen to compete against the other 12 schools in High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put, Discus, 100m, 200m, 800m and 4x100m Relay.  The teams’ impressive performance was evident by the number of 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons they had pinned to their uniforms.  Overall we placed third in the district, an outstanding result considering we had no students represented in the 13yr category. In total we had eight 1st, ten 2nd and nine 3rd place finishes!

Sports Day

Last Friday St Michael’s held its annual sports day on a cool and breezy Autumn day providing ideal conditions for the students to display their skills.

The day kicked off with the opening ceremony and war cries in Bukatila. This gave Bengalee, Prince George and Zebra the chance to yell the roof of the gym and get their fellow house mates excited for the day ahead. Mrs Taylor took the opportunity to get the kids warmed displaying her dance skills and risk taking with her very entertaining ‘Banana Dance’

.DSCN9439

Like in previous years the first half of the day saw the UP and JP participate in tabloid events. The UP focused on 5 main events that included the High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put, 200m and the Sprint. The JP’s had 12 different activities that focused on a range of different skills, including, running, jumping, throwing, hitting, catching and kicking.

The students have been practicing for these events over the past five weeks in P.E and it was great to see their confidence and skills shine on the big day.

The afternoon session of ‘Buddy Relays’ saw the students compete with their buddy class in Rob the Nest, Baton and Fire Fighter Relays. It was fantastic to see the oval buzzing with active children and enthusiastic parents.

At the end of the day when all the races had been run it was Prince George on top closely followed by Zebra and Bengalee.

Team games and cooperative play were the focus in weeks one and two which allowed students to develop new relationships and settle into the new year. The past two weeks have seen the children preparing for the events they will be participating in at sports day. The students must be congratulated on their efforts in P.E lessons and focusing on the challenges and tasks required of them.
