Champions !!

Athletics Success

Congratulations to the St Michael’s Athletics Team who won the Adjusted Trophy at the Barker SAPSASA Athletics carnival today. I couldn’t be prouder of all the students who trained so hard in the lead up to the event and put so much effort into their performances. We came second in the overall standings  just 18 points behind St Francis, a fantastic achievement as we have no students competing in the 13yr category.

WINNERS

Knockout Cricket

The St Michael’s KO Cricket team continued their winning form defeating Hahndorf Primary yesterday 95 – 75. The team has now made it to the semi finals of the event which will be played in November against either the School of Nativity or Our Saviour. Great work boys!

Semi Finals Bound

Firstly I would like to say a massive thank you to all the students, teachers and wider St Michael’s community for such a fantastic term. It has quite easily been the most hectic term of my teaching career but it has also been the most enjoyable and rewarding. I hope you all have a restful break over Easter and I look forward to seeing you all in Term 2.

Sport, Sport and more Sport!!!

Term 1 is always the busiest time of the year for myself at St Michael’s and although it can be overwhelming and hectic I just love the opportunities the kids have to get active and be involved in sport.

Sports Day

On the 17th of March St Michael’s held its annual sports day on a perfect Autumn day providing ideal conditions for the students to display their skills.

The day kicked off with the opening ceremony and war cries in Bukatila. This gave Bengalee, Prince George and Zebra the chance to yell the roof of the gym and get their fellow house mates excited for the day ahead.

Like in previous years the first half of the day saw the UP and JP participate in tabloid events. The UP focused on 5 main events that included the High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put, 200m and the Sprint. The JP’s had 12 different activities that focused on a range of different skills, including, running, jumping, throwing, hitting, catching and kicking.

The students have been practicing for these events over the past five weeks in P.E and it was great to see their confidence and skills shine on the big day.

The afternoon session of ‘Buddy Relays’ saw the students compete with their buddy class in Rob the Nest, Baton and Fire Fighter Relays. It was fantastic to see the oval buzzing with active children and enthusiastic parents.

At the end of the day when all the races had been run it was Zebra on top followed by Prince George and Bengalee

A huge thanks to Novalene  for all the work and assistance in the lead up to the day. Lee-Anne and Jane  in the scoring tent and to all the students, teachers, parent volunteers and spectators who helped make the 2017 St Michael’s sports day such a success.

Barker SAPSASA Swimming

Congratulations to Sam Kemp and Stacey Dowling who participated for the Barker SAPSASA district team at the State Swimming  Championships.

Sam competed in the 12yr Boys Backstroke, Open 100m Freestlye and the Medley Relay

Stacey competed in the 11yr Girls Backstroke.

Well done on representing the school and your district.

KO Cricket

On Wednesday 22nd of March the St Michael’s Knockout Cricket team played St Joseph’s Primary at our school oval. St Michael’s were first to bat and the boys were able to set a very respectable total of 133 through consistent batting and some inconsistent bowling from the opposition (33 wides). When it was our turn to bowl we were able to find a much more consistent line and length and were able to dismiss the opposition for a total of 58. This win now sets up a showdown match against Hahndorf Primary  on Monday 10th of April on the St Michael’s oval at 9:00am. Good luck boys.

Barker SAPSASA Softball

Congratulations to Jack Steiner, Stanley Steiner, Che D’Arcy, Charlie Shearer, Will Kleemann, Mitch Zander, Archie King, Georgia King, Taylor Hogan and Ella Sheldrick who are all competing this week at the State SAPSASA Softball Championships. From all reports both the boys and girls teams are doing well and are having a great week at the carnival.

St Michael’s SAPSASA Athletics Team

On Tuesday the 11th of April 32 students from St Michael’s will be travelling to Oakbank Area School to compete in the Barker SAPSASA Athletics Carnival. We wish the team the best of luck.

Gold for Elle-Rose

Congratulations to Elle-Rose who won gold in the U9 400m at the State Individual Little Athletics Championships. What a fantastic achievement!!

Mad March

MAD MARCH SPORT REPORT

Mad March is in full swing and the craziness of this month has seen the children from St Michael’s challenge themselves and compete across a range of activities and events.

P.E Lessons / Sports Day

In P.E lessons the students have continued to practice for the events they will be participating in at Sports Day. I have been impressed by their positive attitudes to developing new skills so that they can perform their best on Friday.

Just a reminder that the 600m run will be happening this Thursday at 9:30am on the school oval for all students in Years 2-6. Could all students involved please wear their P.E uniform.

Courier Cup

On Thursday 2nd of March the St Michael’s SAPSASA Swimming Team competed at the Courier Cup swimming carnival at Mountain Pool, Mt Barker. Our team consisting of 21 students did a fantastic job with a number of students gaining 1st, 2nd and 3rd place results. Overall we came 4th in the Barker SAPSASA district, which is the best result we have had as a school in the past five years. Congratulations to all who participated.

Knockout Cricket

On Friday 10th of March the St Michael’s Knockout Cricket team played Aldgate primary in its first round match. Aldgate won the toss and elected to bat but were only able to score 83 after the St Michael’s boys put on a fielding clinic taking numerous catches and bowling a consistent line and length. After a slow start to our innings St Michael’s managed to find their form with the bat and comfortably chased down Aldgate’s total, scoring 108 at the end of  25 overs. It was a fantastic team win and performance with a special mention must go to Hayden Knappstein who’s 33 not out guided the team to a solid win . Our next game is against St Josephs next Thursday at St Michael’s

Isabel Harriet Phillips

To add to the excitement of this month Yasi and I had our second child on the 7th of March. Izzy and Yasi are both doing well and she is adored by her big Sister Matilda.

Sporting Achievement

I always love hearing about students sporting successes outside of school hours. Recently Ella and Chloe Sheldrick competed for the Hills Little Athletics Team at the State Relay Championships. Both their teams qualified for the finals but unfortunately didn’t place in the medals.  Congratulations on your efforts girls, what a great experience for you to compete at Santos Stadium.

St Michael CC Team 2017

Welcome to P.E@STMICHAEL’S 2017

Hi All,

Welcome back to 2017. I hope that you have all had a chance to relax and have some fun during the holidays. I had a quiet break but still managed to find the time to play some golf, get a few surfs in and spend lots of time with my family. A highlight of the holidays was teaching my daughter Matilda to surf. You could say it was a very proud Dad moment.

As usual Term 1 is going to be incredibly busy and to add to the craziness Yasi and I are expecting our second child in early March.

I would like to mention quickly how enjoyable my first week back teaching has been. All the classes have been very settled and focused with the children working cooperatively across the multi-age settings. Team games and cooperative play will be the focus over the next 2 weeks before jumping straight into training for sports day which will be held on Friday the 17th of March.

Courier Cup

St Michael’s will again be competing at the Courier Cup SAPSASA Swimming Carnival. Children need to be born between 2007 and 2004. If you are interested in participating please read the information in the link below and call me if you have any questions.

Champions Challenge Success.

Champions Challenge

Yesterday the St Michael’s Athletics team competed in the Champions Challenge athletics carnival at Cornerstone College. This is a fantastic day where students from Spring Head, Lobethal, Unity, St Marks and St Michael’s compete in both track and field for the ‘Inter Lutheran Champions Challenge’ shield.

For the past 3 weeks our team has been spending their recess and lunch times practicing for their individual events. Their hard work and dedication was rewarded yesterday with fantastic performances and uniforms that were decorated with Blue, Red and Green ribbons.

9yr Relay Team

The last time St Michael’s won this event was 2004 and for the past 12 years Unity and St Mark’s have been the teams to beat. After numerous runner up finishes in the past few years it was time for the St Michael’s team to shine and yesterday we won the event finishing 12 points in front of Unity.

What a team #1

I would like to congratulate all of the students on a fantastic effort, Ms Rowett for her help on the day and all the parents who came to support our team and assist with the events on the day.

Hopefully we can retain the shield in 2017.

Mr. Phillips

Success @ Strathalbyn + More !!

EFS Gymkhana

The Eastern Fleurieu School Equestrian Interschool Gymkhana was held at the Strathalbyn show grounds on the 20th August 2016. The team of St Michael’s kids, ponies and parents all did our school proud with fantastic achievements and places for all competitors including Anna & Karl Nitschke, Lane Hera-Singh, Liam Marston, Zac Alhburg, Millie Koster, Caitlin Edwards and Rory Falzon. A special mention goes to Rory Falzon & Liam Marston for winning their age group Aggregate Trophies and Millie Koster for Runner-Up Aggregate.  St Michael’s School competed to a high level winning the Overall Runner Up Aggregate School Trophy only a matter of points behind the host school.  What a fantastic effort!!

Please let me know if you ride and would like to be included in the next Equestrian Interschool event.

Soccer Success

On the 20th of August the Hahndorf Magpies U12 soccer team played Strathalbyn at Strathalbyn. St Michael’s was well represented in the team with six students taking to the field. After a slow first half the Magpies started to use the ball well and put on a dominant display in the second half winning 5-1.  Congratulation the team who have been undefeated this year.

SAPSASA Netball

Congratulations to Taylah Kruger who competed for the Barker District at the recent State SAPSASA Netball competition. The team won three of nine games and the highlight of the week for Taylah was meeting new people and playing netball everyday. Well done Taylah!

Cornerstone Connections

On Monday, Yr 11 students from Cornerstone came to St Michael’s to run coaching courses in Football (girls only), Netball (boys only) and Soccer (mixed). The Cornerstone students are training our year 5 and 6 students to participate in a winter sports carnival in week 7 at Cornerstone. This is a fantastic opportunity which allows the College students to develop their skills in coaching and sports organisation whilst giving our students experiences in new sports and extra physical activity. I will let you all know how the carnival goes next week!

City to Bay

Our City to Bay running group is getting bigger and fitter each week. You still have time if you want to join this awesome and committed squad! 18 days and counting till the big race!

So much sport, such little time to blog!

Welcome back everyone to Term 3. It has been over a month since my last post so there are a few things to report on from the past five weeks.

Holidays

Firstly, I hope you had a great break and were able to engage in some physical activity over the holidays. It has been great seeing all the kids and catching up on their news from the break. I had a busy break which included playing in and winning the Southern Group A Grade golf premiership for Mt Barker/Hahndorf Golf Club and spending time with the family both at Goolwa and in Sydney.

A great way to start the holidays.

A zoo with a view! Taronga Zoo, Sydney.

The last week of Term 2 was extremely busy with 3 different sporting events taking place.

Yr 5 Badminton

On Tuesday the 5th of July the finals of the Year 5 Badminton competition were held. Mitch Zander played against Samuel Kemp in the boys draw and Georgia King played Ava Campbell in the girls. Both finals we tightly contested with Mitch getting the win in the boys and Georgia in the girls. A huge congratulations must go to all the Year 5’s who competed as there were a number of outstanding matches and all the games were played with good spirit and sportsmanship.

Knock Out  Soccer

On Thursday 7th of July the St Michael’s KO Soccer team played against Aldgate Primary. Aldgate came out the blocks strong controlling possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities. Fill in goal keeper Fletcher Squires did a fantastic job stopping these until a one slipped past midway through the first half. After this the boys settled and began to get more possession but unfortunately couldn’t get on the score board. Aldgate scored mid way through the second half after some great play and unfortunately that was our KO soccer campaign over. We congratulate the boys on their efforts.

Knock Out Football

On Friday 8th of July the St Michael’s KO Football team played Happy Valley Primary at Hahndorf Oval. Running out onto the field it was obvious that Happy Valley had a height and size advantage over out young side, but this didn’t deter the boys whose effort and determination couldn’t be questioned. Inaccurate kicking in the first two quarters resulted in St Michael’s being three goal down at half time, however, a  2.3 to 0.1 third quarter had the St Michael’s team heading into the last quarter with all the momentum. Unfortunately we didn’t make the most of our opportunities in the 4th quater and Happy Valley won 4.7 to 2.5.

A special thanks to Ben Judd for umpiring and the army of supporters who came out and assisted on the day. With some outstanding performances from our younger players I look forward to next year.

City to Bay

On the 18th of September the City to Bay Fun Run is being held. This year Mrs Taylor and I are looking to participate in the event and thought it would be a great occasion to bring the St Michael’s community together for some extra fitness. If you are interested in participating in any of the City to Bay races and would like to engage in some pre race training I would love to hear from you. I am looking to start trainings on Thursday afternoons from 3:30pm – 4:15pm and I invite both students and parents to participate in these.

If you are interested in taking part in the City to Bay you can register at www.city-bay.org.au. It is important to know that parents will need to accompany their children on the day and are responsible in getting them to and home from the event. After the race St Michael’s intends to provide a sausage sizzle and drinks for those who have competed.

If you would like to be apart of this or you have any questions please email me MPhillips@stmichaels.sa.edu.au

Something to Cheer about

It’s always great to hear about students having sporting success outside of school. Thanks Therese for the report about Emily and Tanayah’s Cheer group success.

On Saturday 2nd July Emily and Tanayah competed in their first state cheer event.  It was a day of fun, excitement and nerves.  They competed in 2 events; cheer group and stunts.  The highlight was coming 1st Place in their Cheer Group event.  An amazing feat!
