Sports Day

Hi All,

Sports Day

The 2018 school year is in full swing and in P.E we have started to prepare for sports day with the children practicing the various events they will be participating in on the day. A few events will be competed prior to sports day due to the time they take to determine a winner or a shortage of space on the day. The following events will be held early.

Long Jump – Friday 9th of March

High Jump– Friday 9th of March

Students will need to qualify for the above events by clearing certain Height/Lengths in their P.E lessons this week. A note will be sent home on Thursday if a students has been successful in qualifying for the Friday ‘Jump Offs’.  This is only applicable to students in years 2-6

Distance Run – Wednesday 14th of March @1:50pm on the Oval.

Welcome to 2018

Hi All,

Welcome to a new year a St Michael’s. I am looking forward to seeing all the fresh faces around the school and catching up with those children who I have taught already.  I had a relaxing break spending time with family and friends in Adelaide, Goolwa Beach and doing numerous day trips to keep my girls occupied. One of my favourite trips was to Monarto Zoo where we explored walking trails and all the different animals the zoo keeps. I hope all the students had a relaxing break and are excited for a very busy 2018.

Good luck girls, we look forward to hearing about the trip!

What a Year!!

On our final day of the year I would just like to say a huge thanks to the St Michael’s school community for a fantastic year of sport and physical education.

During PE lessons students have been engaged risk taking learners willing to develop new skills and try different sports. My teaching highlights during lesson time included Gymnastics with the BLC, modified Invasion Games with the JLC, Golf with the MLC and Team Handball with the SLC.

Outside of the classroom St Michael’s has performed outstandingly at District SAPSASA championships coming fourth at the Courier Cup and winning the       Cross-Country event at Woodside and the adjusted trophy at the Athletics carnival held at Oakbank.

We also competed in a number of Knockout SAPSASA events including Netball, Football, Soccer, Interschool Gymkhana and Cricket. All these teams performed extremely well with a special mention to our Cricket team who made the State final finishing runners up to Angaston Primary.

This year we had 30 students represent the Barker SAPSASA District at State Carnivals in a range of sports including Golf, Softball, Athletics, Cross Country, Hockey, Netball, Football, Soccer and Swimming.  A special mention must go to Elle Rose Shearer who represented SA in Cross Country and Athletics and Archie King, Georgia King and Charlie Shearer who all competed for SA in softball at the recent Pacific Games.

Finally I would like to thank all the parent volunteers that help throughout the year. Without your help and support the extra curricular activities our students get to be involved in would not be possible.

May you all have a blessed and safe holiday and I look forward to doing it all again in 2018.

Thanks again,

Mick Phillips

Well Done Team!

Congratulations to all the St Michael’s students and parents who participated in the City to Bay this year. It was a fantastic day with beautiful weather and good company to celebrate our achievements with!

I would personally like to say a huge thanks to this amazing crew who provided me with the motivation to train for and run in the City to Bay this year. I am already looking forward to the 2018 run and I hope we can continue to grow the number of participants from our awesome school community.

2017 City to Bay

Only five more sleeps until the big run and I am getting a little excited. It has been fantastic to see our crew of young runners develop their endurance over the past eight weeks in preparation for the event. If you are participating or heading down to the event pop by the St Michael’s Tent (Bay 10) in Wigley Reserve following the race. We will be serving brunch and all are welcome so we hope to see you there. Click on the link below to view our location.

Week 3 News

P.E Lessons

The students have all settled well into Term 3  participating in a focused and engaged way in P.E lessons.

Students in Foundation and Year 1 have developed their throwing, catching and skipping skills through various stations, while students in Students in Years 2-6 developed their skills in specific Invasion Games.  For those of you who are asking “What is an Invasion Game”? Pearson and Webb, 2008 describe them as ‘team games in which the purpose is to invade the opponents territory while scoring points and keeping the opposing teams points to a minimum, all within a certain time period’.

Years 2-3’s are focusing on Basketball with the Year 4-5’s looking at Soccer and the Year 6’s  exploring Netball.

City to Bay

We are now two weeks into our City to Bay training sessions and we saw a large increase in participants this week. We currently have 15 students plus one of their parents committing to the fun run with more hoping to come out next week. With only 5 weeks to go until the big run it would be great to see some new faces next Tuesday at 3:30pm.

Five runners in Week 1 turned into 15 in Week 2.

Can we get 30  St Michael’s students participating in the City To Bay in 2017??

Welcome Back / City to Bay

Welcome back to another exciting semester of P.E at St Michael’s. I hope you all had a great break and were able to recharge the batteries.

This term in lesson time students in Foundation – Year 1 will be focusing on their Fundamental Movement Skills while students in Years 2- Year 6 will be looking at Invasion Games.  Children in Foundation – Year 5 can also look forward to participating in State Swim lessons during weeks 8,9 and 10. The Year 6’s can get excited about participating in the Uraidla Lightning Carnival in week 9.

City to Bay

City to Bay

The City to Bay Fun Run is happening on the 17th of September this year and some St Michael’s staff are looking for students and parents to join them in getting active and participating in the event. You can run, jog or walk either the 12km or 6km course and then join us for a BBQ at the St Michael’s tent when you finish.

Last year we had over 20 students parents and staff participate and it would be great to try and increase that number this year.

We will be doing group trainings of Tuesday afternoons at 3:30pm to help you prepare for the event. (meet at the school playground)

If you are interested in participating head to the link below and register as an individual.

Term 2 in Review

I would just like to start by thanking all the students at St Michael’s for another outstanding Term of Physical Education and sporting achievements.  Our amazing run of success from Term 1 has continued this Term with students from St Michael’s shining at School, District and State level.

District Cross Country

On Friday the 19th of May 29 students from St Michael’s participated at the Barker SAPSASA Cross Country event at Woodside Recreation Grounds. Heavy rains in the lead up to the event created ideal  muddy and slippery conditions for the competitors. The St Michael’s students who had been training at school for three weeks in the lead up to the event were fit and ready to go with race lengths varying between 2km (10 yr olds ) and 3km (11+12 yr olds). All of the students competed to the best of their abilities, all red faced and exhausted after their races. Special mentions must go to Charlie Shearer, Elle-Rose Shearer and Rory Falzon who all won their age divisions.

During the presentation my disappointment of not retaining the Adjusted Score Trophy that we won the year before was quickly turned to joy and excitement when St Michael’s was announced District Champions. What an achievement from an awesome group of kids.

Congratulations to you all.

State Cross Country

On Thursday on the 1st of June, 8 students including Charlie Shearer, Mitchell Zander,  Rory Falzon, Jack Sharrad, Ethan Fry, Dylan Weyland, Elle Rose Shearer and Amelie D’Arcy represented the Barker SAPSASA District at the State Cross Country Championships. They were selected to run in the event held at Oakbank Race Course based on their fantastic performance at the District event above. All the kids competed well on the day and a special mention must go to  Charlie Shearer  who came 8th overall in the 12yr  boys and a massive congratulations to Elle-Rose Shearer who came 1st in the 10yr old girls and will be competing at the National Championships in Tasmania in Term 3.

KNOCKOUT SPORT

KO Soccer

Our Knockout Soccer team played three matches this Term defeating Mt Barker South 4-1 and Uraidla Primary 3-1 before losing to Aldgate Primary 3-0.

In our first two matches the St Michael’s players we able to maintain possession of the ball in our scoring half and put pressure on the opposition teams by having multiple scoring opportunities. The defenders attacked the ball and put pressure on the Mt Barker and Uraidla forwards creating turn overs and limiting their scoring shots. Liam Gibbs starred in goals making a number of skilful saves.

In our third match Aldgate primary was too strong. They gave us a taste of our own medicine maintaining possession of the ball and locking it in their forward half.  Despite not giving up and trying their hardest the St Michael’s boys couldn’t keep up with Aldgate who now will player in the quarter finals.

Sorry I didn’t get a photo of the Team prior to their games 🙁

KO Football

Our Knockout Football team played two games this term winning their first match against Mt Barker South and going down to Happy Valley Primary in their second.  In both games the St Michael’s boys played hard, attacking football and they were able to use their speed and agility to score efficiently. We were dominant against Mt Barker South leading from start to finish playing good team football.

The game against Happy Valley started in a similar way to our first game with  St Michael’s scoring 4.1 to 0.0 in the first quarter. However Happy Valley came to play in the Second quarter scoring 5.3 to 0.0 with their bigger players dominating the game. The third quarter was quite even with the visiting team running over us in the Fourth to win by 5 goals.

Despite the second round loss I congratulate the boys on their attitude and the brand of football they played.

KO Netball

Our Knockout Netball team played Hahndorf Primary in their first match and despite a strong effort they were unable to get the win.  Both teams were evenly matched in the first half, however, Hahndorf were too strong in the second half taking a comfortable victory.

Sorry I didn’t get a photo of the Team prior to their game 🙁
