HOCKEY HELP (From Steve Olsson)
The Adelaide Hills Under 11 Hockey team is looking for three to four players to help boost the numbers of their Hornets team. If you are a boy or girl in year 4 or 5 and are interested in trying out this fast moving and dynamic sport please contact Steve Olsson on 0410 126 028.
Below is a match report from round 1.
The hard work of pitch preparation and line marking had largely been washed away by overnight rain, but sunny skies greeted the eager young Hornets for the first game of the junior mixed hockey season at Anembo. First up were the under 9’s and with 5 of the regular players away, the call was put out to the veterans of last year’s team who were still age eligble. The game against Forsetville was a tight affair early. Making their debut was Max and Charlie Moule- Hooworth who quickly showed their sporting prowess and adapted their slick soccer skills to the hockey format. Daniel “ The Enforcer” Banham and Oscar Percy just picked up from where they left off last season and were solid in defence thwarting many Forestville attacks. By half time the game was fairly evenly poised.
In the second half, the more mature Hornets starting to gain control of the game over their younger opponents with the team growing in confidence and starting to pass the ball wide to set up attacks on goal. It was ultimately the goal hungry Olsson boys who converted the opportunities with Mack slotting 2 goals and Alex 4. A solid 6-0 win being a great way to start the season, with the hope of regular players returning to the team next week.
With a shortage of numbers, those players then buttered up again for the under 11 game against Forestville Red. With fresh legs, Forestville had plenty of early forward entries but Oli Angel showed poise and skill in goals way beyond his years and experience with several saves and clearances. Not be outdone, plenty of gut running by Matilda Angel saw the Hornets start to take the ascendancy in the midfield and she set up plenty of circle entries for Hills. Coach Ben Angel seemed nervous on debut but soon found his voice and seemed pleased with the response he got from his chargers as the game started to turn in favour of Hills. Two goals were slotted before half time, firstly by Oscar Harvey and then Alex Olsson.
A quick goalie switch released Oli Angel into the game and saw he and Harry Moule-Hoowarth ( also on debut) start to take control in the midfield. Oscar Harvey donned the pads for the first time, but saw little action for the half other than the challenge of trying to use his drink bottle with a helmet on. The Hornets started to play on from free hits and move the ball quicker. It was a pleasure to watch, but Forestville defended admirably and repelled most Hills attacks. Eventually the pressure was too great and Matilda Angel hit the backboard sealing a 3-0 win for the Hornets. Special mentions must go to Max and Charlie Moule- Hoowarth who looked comfortable at the level at only 8 years of age and having only picked up a stick for the first time less than 24 hours earlier, as well as Mack Olsson who wasn’t afraid to mix it with the best of them at only 7 years of age.
A solid start to the season for both teams, with wins to both sides being an outstanding result given that both teams played with one player short. Well done Hornets!
Thanks Steve
